Hiking In Our Region of Patagonia

Going on a hike with one of our guides lets you connect with the Patagonian landscape, get some exercise, and learn about our forests, birds, and wildlife!

We offer trekking experiences for all kinds of guests, from easy walks to moderate and challenging adventures designed for the more daring. Our trekkings showcase the unique landscapes of Patagonia. It’s the perfect way to immerse yourself in the stunning Patagonian wilderness, enjoy some outdoor exercise, and discover the unique flora, fauna, and history of the region. With a variety of trails ranging from peaceful forest walks to more adventurous treks, there’s something for every level of hiker.

Treks Leaving From El Encuentro Lodge

  • The trails across the Rio Futaleufu from the lodge are moderate in difficulty, ranging from 3-4 km. You will travel through grassy terrain and climb a short rocky hill, offering good views of the river and valley. You will pass a small lake or two, with good opportunities for bird watching. There are no roads in this area, but don’t be surprised to see some cattle.

  • Located 19 km from the lodge, there is a lovely short walk through the forest offering great views of the Nant y Fall waterfall. Across from the falls is the Nant y Fall Winery where one can enjoy wine tasting and a tour to learn more about vineyards in our area.

  • This hike gives you a very different perspective of the Rio Futaleufu, as it follows the river to the huge hydroelectric dam. The 10 km trail starts where a commercial raft used to cross the river and ends near Futaleufu dam. Your hike travels through foothills and forests with panoramic viewpoints of the valley.

  • Take a 5-hour hike starting just minutes from the lodge. Walk through Patagonian forests of cypress, radal, and lenga trees before reaching a scenic overlook with stunning panoramic views of the Valle 16 de Octubre, Río Grande, and the Situacion Range.

  • Take a 1.5 to 2-hour easy walk along a wide trail. Enjoy a peaceful stroll past a waterfall, lush Andean forests, and historic settlements within Los Alerces National Park.

  • Take a 2.5-hour hike across the Río Grande into the Valle 16 de Octubre. Follow the river through grasslands and transitional forests, with views of the Cordon de los Galeses and the chance to spot grazing animals.

  • Take a 2.5 to 3-hour hike through a lenga forest to the protected Lago Baguilt area. Pass Lago Chico and enjoy spectacular views of the glacier and Cerro Cónico, with opportunities to spot the iconic huemul deer.

Treks Leaving From Brook Trout Base Camp

  • Take a 4-hour round-trip hike to the Lago Gaucho and Balcones del Gaucho. Walk through a lush lenga forest and climb to the scenic overlooks, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of Lago Gaucho and Lago Guachito, surrounded by the Andes mountains.

  • Take a 3-hour round-trip hike along the shores of Lago Berta. Cross small creeks, enjoy the peaceful Patagonian-Andean forest, and climb to the Lago Berta Superior Overlook, with the option to descend to the lake.

  • Take a 2-hour hike to the Hahn Waterfall and explore local history. Visit the historic cemetery of a German family, tour an early 1900s German-style house, and end your walk with views of the Hahn Waterfall and surrounding landscapes.

  • Take a 4-hour hike along an old truck road through a lenga forest to the Timberland Overlook. Enjoy views of the Vinter Valley and Patagonian steppe, or extend your adventure to a full-day hike and summit Cerro Riñón.

Treks Leaving From Carrileufu Valley Lodge

  • Located 10 km from the lodge, we go by van to the beginning of the trail in Los Alerces National Park. It’s an easy walk that offers beautiful views through the forest and lovely landscapes of the Rio Rivadavia and Colegual.

  • Take a 3-hour boat trip to the far end of Lake Menendez in Los Alerces National Park. From there, go for a 9 km hike into this unspoiled region of the forest.

  • Take a boat to the north end of Menedez Lake to hike through the Valdivian Forest and reach a 2,600-year-old Alerce Tree “El Abuelo.”

  • The guide takes you by vehicle for approximately 40 minutes to the start of the trail. The trekking follows the course of Arroyo el Turco to reach the beautiful Lake Pedro where you can also enjoy fly fishing. This hike offers beautiful views of the entire valley and allows you to learn more about the native flora and fauna.

  • Take a one-hour boat to where you will start a steep hike for 2-3 hours to reach the stunning foothill of Torrecillas Glacier. Here you will have a packed lunch and enjoy it by this stunning high-altitude turquoise lake.
